Wine Cap Mushroom

Wine Cap Mushroom

Scientific name

Stropharia rugosoicannulata

Description

Wine Cap Mushroom is a beautiful burgundy-colored mushroom that is also called burgundy mushroom because of its color. These mushrooms also named king Stropharia or garden giant and are agar in nature and belong to the family Strophariaceae. The wine cap mushroom has a dark red-brown convex to flattened cap that may measure up to 30 cm in diameter. Because of its size, it is also known as the Godzilla mushroom and can reach heights of 20 cm. The gills start off being pale, then become grey, and then turn a deep purple. They have a tall stem, which has a wrinkled ring, and the solid flesh is both white.

When they are immature, they have a ring surrounding their gills, which moves down the stalk as they develop. Their body and stem are creamed to white. The ring is not like the other mushrooms. Instead, it is radially divided, which renders it prone to shattering into smaller pieces or giving the appearance of a wheel.

Habitat

The wine cap mushroom is native to North America, New Zealand, Europe, and Australia. They are mostly found growing on wood chips and preferably grow in the summer and winter seasons. They are the best garden companions with corn. Additionally, they can be found in seasonal floodplains as well as on the forest floor in regions with woody waste or where trees have been chopped down. They develop both randomly and in groups.

Uses/Importance

The Wine caps mushroom grows well in beds that can be readily modified to provide mushroom mulching just about everywhere. They are powerful supporters of soil and plant development and can withstand greater sunlight exposure than the majority of the different mushrooms we grow. This makes them quite ideal for cultivating in gardens. These mushrooms have the distinct characteristic that they contain a special type of cells called acanthocytes that is spiny. These cells are responsible for the digestion and immobilization of nematodes and get them trapped until they die and decompose.
