Description
Scientific name: Tamandua tetradactyla
Life span: Up to 9 years in captivity
The c is called an anteater and has a medium-sized body, however, its size can vary greatly depending on its surroundings. Its head and body are between 34 -88 cm long, while its prehensile tail is hairless and between 37- 67 cm long. Adult males and females are around the same size and weigh between 2 – 8 kg. They have front feet that have about four claws while hind legs have feet with 5 claws. The underside is hairless. They have long immovable snouts that have protruding tongues. The tongue and long snout help them to catch ants from rocks and narrow spaces. They have excellent hearing and smell senses, despite having a limited vision.
Native Region/Habitat
Tamandua tetradactyla may inhabit heights up to 2000 meters. They are native to South America, Trinidad, southern Brazil, Venezuela, Argentina, and Uruguay.
As Pet
Behavior/Temperament
Tamandua species inhabit trees and are called arboreal. Each day, they go through several nests in search of termites, small insects, and ants. They spend a lot of time climbing and can travel from tree to tree because of their prehensile tails. Tamandua will retreat into a tree or cling onto a limb with their tails and protect themselves with the help of their sharp claws if they feel endangered or assaulted. They also have an anal gland that secretes liquid secretions that is more powerful as a defense mechanism. Predators are stopped in their pathways when this material is sprayed. They are terrible companions because they also use a spray to define their territory.
Care/Grooming
Tamandua needs a lot of climbing space when maintained in captivity. Strong twigs and poles that are available both inside and outside must be capable of supporting the body weight of this creature. To maintain the health of foot muscles, give them a range of diameters. Outdoor cages need to include room for climbing, exploration, and security. A building or tree stump that has been hollowed out and is heated on chilly evenings offers a cozy bed. It is allowed inside, lock up your things and keep an eye on it at all times for its own protection.
